beastman - cosmic nature

december 05, 2011

element presents 'cosmic nature' - an exhibition of new paintings by beastman. the seeming dominance over our world is illusory and ephemeral. we consider ourselves masters of all creation, but as a species, humanity is insignificant on a cosmic scale, our limited perceptions allow us to only see a fraction of reality. ‘cosmic nature’ is a refreshing new series of paintings by sydney based artist beastman that explores the futuristic and overwhelming idea of nature coming to life in a way we could have never imagined. a new colour palette and further development of his distinctive style, reflects the different elements of our young world, organic lines and the often symmetrical geometric patterns found in nature. whatever meaning or purpose may or may not be invested in these paintings, the deities featured in his ambitious new works are a representation of what lies beyond the boundaries of our imagination, when the cosmic forces of nature eventually reveal the irrelevance of humanity in the universe. this exhibition also acts as a launch for beastman’s first publication. ‘suburban nature’ is a limited edition 60 page zine featuring street art, murals and collaborations created by the artist over 2 years throughout 10 different countries, documenting the journey and development of the artist’s distinct style. the exhibition opens thursday 8 december 2011 7pm-10pm and continues until 18 december at kind of gallery, 72 oxford street, darlinghurst (sydney). more info and zines available to purchase online here - www.beastman.com.au

daek - still under the influence

december 05, 2011

a composite mesh of graffiti, illustration, fantasy and photo-realism. light and complex, with a hint of lustful attitude. 'still under the influence' exhibits a new selection of pieces capturing daek william’s world of influence and appreciation. throughout his career, an obsession and fascination with the female form has been the strongest theme in daek’s monstrous and detailed canvases. this new exhibition brings his classic work to view and enters into a new period for the artist. using a unique style of laying origami crowns on the heads of his subjects, daek new work depicts the artists who he admires and collaborates with. daek’s deeply personal paintings take on the subject of the influential artist he admires, shares friendships with, and the stories that they have to convey. show opens friday 9 december 2011 7.30pm at rtist gallery, 29 st edmonds rd, prahran (melbourne). more info here - www.rtist.com.au

all things lost

november 21, 2011

'all things lost' is an exhibition of new works by mark alsweiler and max berry. addressing the loss of the noble savage and the resulting dichotomy between reverie and the everyday. max berry lives and works in sydney Australia, his work depicts meditative landscapes and seemingly vulnerable figures, whose calm isolation prompts the viewer to consider the relationship between the actual and the spiritual, agency and fate and the narrative in which they may co-exist. mark alwseiler, born in new zealand, now living an working out of sydney has an affinity with the imagery of yesteryear form the basis of his work. his instantly recognizable acrylic paintings and wooden sculptures often involve themes revolving around a world of contrasts. alsweiler's work sees the beautiful cooperation of opposites and a union where contradiction becomes complement. the show opens thursday 24 november 2011 and continues until december 11 at nine lives gallery, winn st, fortitude valley (brisbane). more info here - wehaveninelives.blogspot.com

drewfunk - parity

november 21, 2011

'parity' is a solo exhibition of new paintings by drewfunk examining the harmonious themes of balance and equality, present and past, heritage and ancestry, memory and experience. the artworks draw upon both western imagery and oriental symbolism to reference drewfunk’s experience across two cultures; as experienced when the artist moved from malaysia to australia. the artworks explore harmony and equality through the pairing of opposing colours, themes, mediums and cross-cultural art forms. in a step away from drewfunk’s familiar ink works, 'parity' seeks to master the medium of paint through elegant, fluid brushwork. drewfunk’s graffiti and street art roots remain evident within the works, as he combines aerosol techniques with traditional oriental brushwork and symbolism to create a vibrant flare and movement on the canvas. the show opens friday 25 november 2011 6-9pm at paradise hills gallery, 1-9 doonside st, richmond (melbourne). more info here - www.drewfunk.com
